BROWN UNIVERSITY RESOURCES

CAPS

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Brown provides crisis interventionshort-term individual therapygroup therapycommunity outreach and referral services. CAPS also offers consultation to students, faculty and staff who are concerned about the well-being of students. There is no longer a limit on the number of therapy sessions that students can have, but they do still employ a short-term model of care, and may offer to refer students to off-campus providers, if they are seeking long-term mental health care.

CAPS is located in J Walter Wilson 516, behind the opaque glass doors. To make an appointment, call (401) 863-3476, or come to the office in person. Hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-5:00 PM. In the event of an urgent situation, let the staff know that immediate attention is needed. On nights and weekends, CAPS employs ProtoCall Services counselors who will refer you to appropriate resources and help with crisis management. If the situation is very urgent, you can call EMS at (401) 863-4111.

In order to make an appointment with the psychiatrist (a medical practitioner specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness - i.e. prescribing medication) you’ll need a referral from a staff therapist or a local community therapist.

Referred off campus, but need help figuring out insurance, appointments and travel? Need help with academic or living accommodations for mental illness?
Not sure if you'd like to go to therapy, but still want to talk to someone about what you're going through?

Check out the Peer Mental Health Advocates! We're available to help you navigate CAPS and Brown resources, community referrals, and personal issues you might be experiencing. Many of our PMHAs use these resources themselves!

*If you would like to talk to someone, or if you’re looking for information about what kind of support is available on campus we are here to help. If you are considering seeking professional help, we can help you prepare to take that step. If your concerns are beyond the scope of our training, we will support you and help you access other relevant on- and off-campus resources.
